Intuitive Eating

Optimal nutrition is best achieved by maintaining a healthy relationship with food and trusting the body to guide the eating process. Intuitive eating is the innate ability to feed oneself based on internal feeding cues such as hunger and satiety. It involves choosing foods without feelings of guilt or worry and without judging the food being eaten or oneself for eating. Restoring your ability to eat intuitively allows you to return to your natural, internal cues, instead of relying on outside influences. Intuitive eating has been referred to as “making peace with food” by trusting the body’s internal wisdom.

Holistic Nutrition

Definition of holistic: Relating to or concerned with complete systems rather than analysis of, treatment of, dissection of individual parts. Therefore, holistic healing refers to the integration of body, mind, and spirit and in-turn, bringing these aspects into balance. The holistic perspective views the human body as a whole unit made up of intricate systems that depend on one another to function efficiently and optimally. Although food is the foundation of holistic nutrition, proper digestion is required for the optimal use of nutrients consumed. Poor digestion is the precursor to many illnesses and diseases; therefore, optimization of the health of the gastrointestinal tract is critical to holistic healing. Poor gastrointestinal functioning can have a significant impact on body, mind and spirit for a multitude of reasons. The human body has an innate ability to heal; however, it needs the proper environment to do so. This includes both internal and external environments.

EATING DISORDERS

Eating disorders refer to a group of conditions characterized by abnormal eating behaviors that involve varying amounts of food intake, i.e. insufficient or excessive food, and intense thoughts, feelings and attitudes around food and body weight. Although generally emotionally based, eating disorders are manifested through an individual’s relationship and behavior towards food. Eating disorders are potentially life-threatening conditions that can affect an individual's physical and mental health and should always be taken seriously. They can occur at every age range, any ethnicity and in both males and females. Early detection is important to provide necessary treatment and increase the likelihood for long-term recovery.
